Web Archiveの削除申請手順【身バレ実体験】

始まり

前回の記事ではJPGのメタデータにはいろいろなものが含まれているというお話をしました。

実はかつてこのサイトでJPG写真をそのまま加工せずに投稿してしまったということがありました。 そのメタデータには私の地元の位置座標が含まれており、やろうと思えば特定できてしまうのでした。

その画像は発覚した直後に削除しました。ああ、よかった。これで安心だ。…とはならなかったのです。

Web Archiveというサイト

Web Archiveをご存知でしょうか？ Wikipediaによれば

ウェブアーカイブ (web archive) は、WWW（web、ウェブ）全体もしくはその一部を収集し、そのコレクションを後世の研究者、歴史家、一般大衆のために保存して、アーカイブとしたもの。

とあります。 端的に言えば、一度インターネットに公開されたものを記録するというものです。 となると、当然私の大事な情報もここに残ってしまうわけです。

削除への手順

本題です。 削除をしたいものの、Webサイトには削除ボタンも依頼もないじゃないか！ 調べ回っていると、公式案内にて、info@archive.orgへメールをよこせと書いてありました。

メールによる削除要請

WebArchiveはアメリカの団体ですので、私は英語で以下のように書きました。

Subject: Request for Removal from the Wayback Machine (Personal Data Exposure)

Dear Internet Archive Team,

I am the owner and administrator of https://www.big-a-k.com.

Some JPG images from my website were archived on the Wayback Machine and unfortunately contained EXIF metadata that could reveal personal location information.


For privacy and safety reasons, I would like to request removal or exclusion of the affected captures for my site.


I am the original content owner, and the information in question includes personally identifiable data.
Could you please review this request and remove the relevant records?

端的に言えば、「うっかり個人情報を載せてしまったので、アーカイブから削除してほしい」という内容です。

これは端的に言えば、「添付したリンク先のフォームを書いて」という内容です。 リンク先はGoogle Formっぽい感じのもので、サイトの管理者であるかどうかとかメールアドレスの確認、どの期間でどんなデータを削除すれば良いのかといった事を淡々とされる感じでした。

waybackverify.txtの配置

私のケースでは、アンケートの最後にサイトのルートへwaybackverify.txtを配置し、運営者本人からの要請であることを証明するよう求められました。 例えばwww.example.com/waybackverify.txtのような形ですね。

メールと同じような内容を書いて、配置しておきました。今でも確認ここからできます。

結果

最終的にArchiveからは削除されました。削除された旨の連絡はなく、気がついたら消えていると言った感じでした。

当初はアクセスするとerror 502が表示されるだけで、内部では論理削除になってるのかと思いました。 しかし、その後はきちんと全てのデータが削除され、あたかも何もなかったかのような状態になっていました。 よかった。
